Endeavour Replica Arrives in Whitby
A piece of history has returned to Whitby
The replica of the ship Captain James Cook used to sail to Australia and New Zealand has arrived in Whitby to form part of a new tourist attraction.
The Endeavour replica was built in Australia and arrived in Whitby on Saturday, July 22. The ship will be open to the public from July 29 and will form part of a new tourist attraction called the Endeavour Experience.
The Endeavour Experience will tell the story of Captain Cook's voyages and the role that Whitby played in his life. Cook was born in Marton, near Middlesbrough, and served his apprenticeship as a seaman in Whitby.
The Endeavour replica is a faithful recreation of the original ship, which was built in Whitby in 1764. The replica is 46.5 metres long and 11.5 metres wide, and is made from English oak.
The Endeavour Experience is a major investment in Whitby and is expected to attract thousands of visitors each year. The attraction will create jobs and boost the local economy.
Endeavour was originally the merchant collier Earl of Pembroke built by Thomas Fishburn for Thomas Millner launched in June 1764 from the coal and whaling. Whitby cats were wide-beamed shallow-draught lightly rigged vessels built in Whitby designed for the coastal trade. Gelegentlich wird das Schiff als Whitby Cat bezeichnet oder in zeitgenössischen Marineakten als Katt-gebautes Fahrzeug oder gar Katt-gebaute.
